In this Yamaha C40 classical guitar review, you’ll know if the instrument is right for you. You’ll also see how you might benefit from it’s features, and how others’ experiences with it were like.
Before, I thought Yamaha only makes motorcycles and other vehicles. When I learned that they also make musical instruments, I initially thought that they are probably poor quality. But most of my acquaintances say otherwise, and the Yamaha C40 was usually one of their many examples.
Yamaha C40 Review: Is it a Good Beginner Classical Guitar?
This Yamaha C40 review is for novices looking for a beginner classical guitar. If you don’t have a guitar yet, and you’re not ready to spend significantly, then you’ll find this post useful. Yamaha itself says that the C40 is a full size classical guitar built with beginners in mind.
If you’re an advanced player looking for an upgrade, you’re better off checking out other options. Though the C40 delivers great quality for it’s low price, it doesn’t have the finer details that pros look for.
Value for Money: The Yamaha C40 Price
The Yamaha C40 price is an amount that beginners would be comfortable to spend. For about half the average rate of Manhattan hotels, you get a guitar that could last for years. And with barely increasing the cost, you could get it in a bundle with the following:
- Padded gig bag
- 12-Pack Dunlop picks
- Digital tuner
- Onstage guitar stand
- Instructional DVD
The strings aren’t that great though. If you’ll replace it, you could use the visual guide in a previous post about learning acoustic guitar. But despite this, the C40 is still far better than the less popular brands available online.
But is the Sound as Cheap as the Price?
The short answer is no, and a lot of people agree. In fact, the sound have surprised many, given that the price is low. The sound have often been described as beautiful, excellent and more. It’s one of the main reasons why the C40 is said to be among the top classical acoustic guitars around.
However, don’t expect it to sound like a thousand dollar guitar. The C40 has a Spruce top and Indonesian Mahogany back and sides – but the woods are laminate. Hence, the projection isn’t as good as a solid wood guitar (it seems to be more muted).
Such subtle nuisance is usually perceived by advanced players and hardcore music lovers. But for beginners, the C40’s sound is more than enough to get compliments from family and friends. You could check the sound yourself in the video below. Keep in mind that the quality may be affected by your hardware and other factors:
How it Feels to Play the C40
The good thing about getting a Yamaha instead of lesser brands is that it plays great out of the box. People who already bought a C40 have not found defects that affect its playability.
Like most other classical guitars, the neck is wide and made of Nato. The fretboard is rosewood, which is generally oily and is less prone to drying out over time. Hence, it has a smooth feel and is easy to play.
However, all that doesn’t mean that the C40 will be comfortable for everyone. As mentioned earlier, it’s a full sized guitar and it won’t fit everbody. If you’re relatively small, or are buying for a youngster, then you might want to consider the Yamaha CS40ii instead. It’s like the C40 but with a shorter scale length and thinner body.
Looks Just as Good as it Sounds
The C40 has a gloss finish that is traditional for classical guitars. It looks great with a little shine that the majority of people prefer. It does tend to get fingerprints and smudges easily, so you might have to regularly wipe it down with a guitar rag.
Some people who used to own a C40, and bought another recently, have noticed differences in the design. The things that changed were the color, sound hole art and the headstock branding. Nonetheless, they still find the C40 beautiful and with quality craftsmanship (no rough wood edges and the likes).
The Yamaha C40 is a nice beginner classical guitar. It surprisingly sounds good for it’s very low price. It’s features make it very much playable or comfortable to use. It also looks appealing and has a high quality of craftsmanship. To read other people’s opinions, and to check the current price, just click here.
